New Focus Group Reports Published

13 September 2023
Obesity Action Scotland has published findings from a focus group project carried out with members of the Scottish public. Three focus group sessions were completed between November 2022 and March 2023 with the aim of exploring public opinion on issues relating to obesity and the food environment. The unique findings contribute to the evidence base and help fill a knowledge gap for descriptive data on obesity policy in Scotland.

Each session covered a different theme relating to the food environment in Scotland; these were Food Deals and Special Offers (Promotions), The Out of Home Sector, and Industry Influence. Within each session, participants were presented with relevant evidence on the theme to allow for informed discussions to take place.

There was encouraging evidence that many participants recognised the problems covered and their importance in determining diet and health outcomes. The results also reflected the conflicting views that surround public health issues and population-level interventions. Discussions that demonstrated lower levels of agreement and contradiction of evidence also provide the public health community with information on where work is still needed to increase public awareness and support.
