Our response to Scottish Government consultation on Wellbeing and Sustainable Development Bill

The Scottish Government is gathering views to help inform the scope of any legislation for a proposed Wellbeing and Sustainable Development Bill. The Bill aims to further improve decision making and the implementation of the National Performance Framework to ensure that all policy and delivery is focused on increasing the wellbeing of people living in Scotland, both now and in the future.

The consultation is seeking views on the proposals for the Bill, with the aim to ensure that decision-making is focused on delivering the National Outcomes for both current and future generations.

In our response, we discuss how we think wellbeing and sustainable development should be defined and what needs to change to support delivery of them. We do not feel the National Outcomes in their current form are sufficient to deliver on the aims and objectives of the proposed Bill, and so should be updated accordingly to reflect wellbeing and sustainable development.

We support proposals in the consultation for the creation of a Future Generations Commissioner. It's important that any Commissioner role is fully independent and can hold all relevant actors to account in delivering on commitments within the Bill to ensure the wellbeing of future generations is considered and not undermined in decision-making processes.

The consultation closes on 14th February 2024.
